So I 3D printed my boyfriend’s face with his Prusa I3 MK3! 🙂
As you can see there is a bottom 5 layer white board and the rest is printed with black on top of it.
This technique for creating a 2d image out of an actual image will really not work with images with bad lighting, as it kind of relies to there being nice shading and all.
First I converted the image to .dxf with Inkscape (Path -> Trace bitmap), then imported it into OpenSCAD, added the bottom white layer, saved as STL and printed.
I also inserted a pause (really manually, by editing the .stl file with Notepad++) with M600 g-code command after the last white layer, to allow me to change the color in between. Took a few tries to get it right, but here is it 😀
